Sylvain is proposing solo recitals around masterpieces of the viola repertoire as well as less known pieces, or transcriptions. His current program is called
“Solitary genius: Conversations with Bach, Telemann, Stravinsky and Reger”
This program explores the viola's remarkable versatility, tracing a musical journey from the Baroque era through to the 20th century. From Telemann's innovative solo writing to Bach's profound counterpoint, from Stravinsky's emotional restraint to Reger's complex romanticism, the recital offers a comprehensive exploration of the viola's expressive potential.
The carefully curated selection showcases the viola not just as an accompanying instrument, but as a powerful, independent voice capable of conveying profound musical narratives.
GEORG PHILIPP TELEMANN
Fantasie No. 7 in A-flat Major (±7 minutes)
From the renowned "12 Fantasias for Solo Violin," published in 1735, Telemann's work represents a high point of Baroque solo writing. These pieces, originally written for violin, showcase the viola's capacity for melodic expression and technical brilliance, demonstrating why Telemann was considered one of the most important composers of his time.
IGOR STRAVINSKY
Elegie in C minor (±6 minutes)
Composed in 1944, this deeply introspective work reveals Stravinsky's ability to create profound emotional landscapes through minimal musical material. Written during World War II, the Elegie reflects a moment of personal reflection and artistic restraint, contrasting sharply with Stravinsky's more revolutionary orchestral works.
MAX REGER
Suite No. 1 in G minor for Viola Solo (±15 minutes)
Reger's solo suites represent a powerful bridge between late Romantic complexity and early 20th-century musical exploration. Deeply influenced by Bach's solo cello suites, this work demands extraordinary technical precision and emotional depth from the performer, showcasing the viola's rich, contemplative voice.
JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH
Cello Suite No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1009 (Transcription for Viola) (±25 minutes)
Originally composed for solo cello around 1720, this suite exemplifies Bach's genius for creating complete musical worlds with a single melodic instrument. A masterpiece of solo instrumental writing, this suite explores a rich emotional landscape. Bach crafts a remarkable musical journey through six movements. From the expansive Prélude to the spirited final Gigue, the suite showcases the depth and complexity of Bach's musical imagination.
